Soon after entering Iraq, Private Lynched got her first chance to be a heroine. One evening in her camp, someone left a gas cooker unattended. The cooker exploded, but in the ensuing chaos Private Lynched kept her head and did the right thing.

Having taken some shrapnel in her little finger, Private Lynched still
had enough energy to save her best friend’s life.
Her friend later said
from her hospital bed: "Private Jessica
Lynched is awesome. I can’t stop thinking about Private Jessica Lynched.
She’s cool. And by cool, I mean totally sweet."
